What for goodness' sake are RIAs?

Answer: the future of the Internet!

Then we suppose it is a good thing that a three-day intensive workshop is being given on developing RIAs in Cape Town this month by UK über-programmer, and twice-published author, Aral Balkan.

“Rich Internet Applications”, or RIAs, are what made Balkan famous in the Macromedia’s international community, where he presides as Director of Educational Content on its Flash resource site Ultrashock.com. The man doesn’t mince words : “RIAs are websites, or web applications, that rival the usability and features of desktop applications”. Basically, a site that’s as useful and simple to use as Microsoft Word or iTunes!

Those are brave words. But then Balkan is the sort who writes best-practices open-source RIA frameworks like the Ariaware RIA Platform and serves as Director of the acclaimed London Macromedia User Group in his spare time. Either way, it sounds like web developers are going to be giving desktop programmers a serious run for their money. And very soon.
